Because this happened in the book.
It's been years since I've read this part of the book, but, the way I remember it, Marius thought it was a good idea to basically stalk Cosette and Valjean every time they came to the park. One day, Jean Valjean accidentally left his hanky on the bench he and Cosette always sat at, and Marius looked at it and, seeing the 'U' embroidered on it, somehow immediately came to the conclusion that this hanky belonged to Cosette, and that her name MUST be Ursula. Because that's a name every guy guesses for the girl they secretly admire to a creepy extent.
Marius. Don't pick up strange hankies in public parks. Who knows what might be on them??
